Key West, Florida:
This weekend was one for the books. You can call it paradise or Key West (located in South Florida). I flew out to MIA and then connect to Key West around 5:30pm last week Thursday. As you’ve seen through my updates the trip was much needed. My purpose was to explore the newly open Gates Hotel. The boutique hotel is only an 8 minute ride from the airport (very convenient).
Key West itself reminds me of the Caribbean and guess what? Ive never even been. Well the Bahamas when I was much younger, but not recently. Its so relaxing to escape the hustle and bustle of New York city. The street lights, the grand central rush, the slow walking tourist in Times Square and the ‘Insufficient Fare” noise when swiping your Metro card on the last day. Leaving NYC for a few days is a treat itself.
Im sharing my whole experience with you guys even after the social updates through a series of blog posts. If you’ve ever wanted to fly out to Key West here is what you should do and why. Enjoy my photo journal and comments below.
Where To Stay: The Gates Hotel
The Gates left a a smile on my face entering and leaving. Not only are the staff super friendly, everyone in Key West is too! Don’t forget the chickens, they run around freely on the street and are really friendly too. One resident smiled and said ‘they are our neighbors too!’
The lobby is decked out in beach house vibes and neutral colors. Although the decor is really chill I love the pops of colors added (see blues and oranges). My energy went up just thinking about my very simple, but modern room. I stayed a few nights and made myself at home fromthe first day I arrived.
Breakfast in bed is always a good idea at The Blind Pig food truck..steps away from the room.
My room overlooked the pool and palm trees. There is also live music by the bar in the afternoon.
Swimming and shading by the pool was relaxing. I was clearly prepared with my mini super soaker and float (with cups holders, CUP HOLDERS ARE IMPORTANT!). The pool is the best way to cool down after bike riding all day.
No more sun? I snuck into the canopy to read for a bit and get out of the sun.
Everyone gets to their destination by biking or car. Biking in Key West is pure relaxation, the views make it a grand experience. It was so peaceful compared to a Citi Bike ride in Manhattan. Tons of Palm trees and ocean views no matter which direction you go in.
Since the island is small and private theres an opportunity to experience water activities in another way. In Key West watching the sunset in Mallory Square is a big deal. They sky turns purplish and with all of the color around Key West it turns into one big vibrant party. I took a boat tour called Sunset Sails which included live music and open bar all while sailing toward the sunset.
If you’re feeling lazy you could just order Papa Johns to the room like I did on the 3rd day. But after bike riding your appetite will start to kick in no matter what. Key West is known for their Key Lime Pie and I had to try a piece before leaving. Grab a meal and dessert from Blue Heaven before you leave, its one of the city’s most popular restaurants.
